An imperceptible painter fluctuating between naturalism - so in vogue at the end of the 19th Century – and melancholic works of art with touches of symbolism, Albert Maignan (1845- 1908) is one of the great and forgotten artists of this period. Celebrated and remembered by the Taylor Foundation and the Picardie Museum, which both accepted to share the artist’s heritage, Maignan finally takes the legitimate place among talented artists he occupied in Paris at the end of the century. Trained by Jules Noël and Évariste Luminais, Maignan became a faithful fixture of the French Salon des Artistes as early as 1867, with successful exhibitions that continued until his death. Reputed for his painting flair, reminiscent of grandiose decorations inspired by his numerous trips to Italy, where he discovered the classics of the XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries, Albert Maignan’s name is linked to the monumental construction sites of his time. He left behind a masterful and forever-vibrant collection: the walls and ceilings of the famous Train Bleu restaurant at Paris’ Lyon Train Station and Opéra-Comique theater, tapestries in the Senate building, the protruding spandrels of the Paris City Hall palace, the stained glass windows of the Saint-Philippe-du-Roule church… Appointed President of the Taylor Foundation in 1905, the artist would bequest his Parisian home-studio on 1, rue La Bruvère. Albert Maignan played a decisive role in the artistic life of Paris at the turn of the century, working with unceasing generosity to promote and protect artists.

Baron Taylor, the Association of Artists & the Exhibition at Bazar Bonne-Nouvelle in 1846
Published under the direction of Bruno Foucart, the souvenir edition of the exhibition, a major event in the life of artists of the XIXth Century. This exhibition was the biggest of the “free” exhibitions organized on the fringe of the Salon. The initiative was taken by the Association of Artists, an association of mutualized assistance founded by Baron Taylor in 1844. The uniqueness of the exhibition lay in its display of tableaux by Ingres, who boycotted the Salon from 1834 and by David who, after a loss in popularity due to the triumph of romanticism, was enjoying renewed interest in his work. The most vocal critics of the time, including Baudelaire and Thoré-Bürger, would salute this event.
